Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu, and “The Queen of the South”. Formerly known as Madras, Chennai is both historic and industrial, a small sleepy¬†sea-side village of 9 million people and also 1/3 of the entire economic output of the state.

There are heaps of fun things to do in Chennai. Here’s just a few:

  • Visit Kapaleeshwara Temple in Mylapore and peek and poke through the small shops that line Mylapore’s ancient lanes and byways (lunch in Saravana Bhavan or Karpagambal Mess for an authentic South Indian dosa)
  • Walk up the ancient Catholic steps to the top of St. Thomas Mount, and see Chennai from St. Thomas’ favorite spot to preach
  • Visit St. Thomas’ grave in Santhome church
  • Have delicious hot bhaji on the beach at Besant Nagar
  • Stroll the peaceful grounds of the Theosophical Society (closed Sundays)
  • Check out the deer and monkeys in the IIT Madras campus
  • Shop shop shop in T. Nagar (for sarees) or Spencer Plaza, Express Avenue, or Phoenix Market city malls
  • Dance the night away at Bikes & Barrels, 10 Downing Street, The Dubliner, or Pasha
